Beaches near Frigiliana!

Beach life on Burriana... The beaches here are fantastic, ranging from the broad sweep of bustling Burriana to the small intimate bays of the Balcon and Playa Calahonda. All of them are an easy drive from Frigiliana.

Should you ever tire of Nerja's beaches take the A340 toward the caves and continue on towards Herradura. You will find many parking places along the way, with steep paths winding down to less crowded beaches, in wonderful locations.

Burriana beach

This beach probably needs no introduction as it is featured on every travel programme about Nerja and Frigiliana. A beautiful wide bay, mainly sand, provides super sun and swimming opportunities.

BurrianaThere is also scuba diving equipment and training available.

If you have children, adolescents, or are simply young in heart and spirit, Burriana and its all day, all night lifestyle is for you.

The beach, and the road immediately behind it, have countless bars and restaurants catering for every taste. Sunbeds and parasols can be rented for about 4 or 5 euros per day

Beach chef in action! Burriana is the perfect family beach. But as a result it gets extremely crowded in Summer. If you want to avoid long walks and hot traffic jams make sure you get there early! Leave Frigiliana by nine and you'll be OK.

Coming back toward the centre of Nerja you will encounter the beaches, Carabeo and El Chorillo.

Beaches near the Balcon de Europa

The Balcon area is the hub of Nerja. All roads seem to lead to it and once you are there, street musicians, jugglers, henna artists and countless other entertainers compete for both attention and any spare euros.

There are at least three beaches well worth visiting when crowded out of Burriana, or if you just want something quieter

Calahonda beach

Calahonda beach The tourist office is on the left corner of the Balcon (if you look from town to sea). Walk down the windy steps, past the old fishermen repairing their nets and feeding their cats and you reach this small and charming beach.

There are a few sunbeds and parasols to rent, a few fishermen's cottages cut into the stone, and a pleasant retaurant - Papagayo providing meals snacks and toilets. The small sandy cove is ideal for holidaymakers of all ages.

Caletilla (playa Balcon de Europa)

Balcon beach Directly on the Balcon square, and overlooking the sea, is the Hotel Balcon de Europa. One of the best hotels in Nerja, and certainly one of the best locations.

If you continue down the windy path, past Calahonda beach and around the headland to the right you come to this beach.

Although it is not owned by the hotel, the sunbeds and parasols are all provided by the establishment, giving it the appearance of a private beach. It is small, smaller than Calahonda, but you can sunbathe on the hotel terrace if you don't fancy the sand.

The restaurant (El Nautico), and other facilities, are what you would expect from a first class hotel and the beach is very pleasant out of season (when the hotel no longer charges for its loungers!). Appealing to an older clientele, perhaps?

El Salon beach

El Salon beach On the opposite side of the Balcon to the tourist information office, is the pretty church, Iglesia el Salvador. There is a small road to the left, passing by an Irish pub and restaurant. Walk on and you will get to this beach.

This is a lovely quiet sandy bay, very popular with locals and very rarely inundated with visitors. It is charming, peaceful, unspoilt and well worth a visit.
