Frigiliana golf and outdoor activities

This section of the site suggests ideas for golfers and and other outdoor sports.
I have not provided a comprehensive list and when you visit this area you will find many other diversions and entertainments.

Golfing in Frigiliana

Neither Frigiliana or Nerja currently has a golf course. There is one planned for Nerja but it is unlikely to open before 2009, so be patient!

However, needless to say there are many golfers in and around Frigiliana. The Golf International Society (GINS) has about 700 members and meets at the 19th hole, Ed. Almeria, bajo, Avda Castilla Perez, Nerja (tele 952 252 1024)

Golfing near Frigiliana

There are two very good golf courses within an easy drive of Frigiliana. Baviera and Anoreta. These are described below:

Baviera golf course

Baviera is about a 15 minute drive from Frigiliana. Drive down to the motorway and head toward

BavieraMalaga. You will see Baviera golf course in about 15 minutes on your left. Exit the motorway at #277 and follow directions to Caleta de Velez.

Baviera was designed by José María Cañizares, the prestigious professional golfer. Cañizares is one of Spain's most international and charismatic golfers who has won 5 European circuit tournaments and 2 world championships, as well as playing in the Ryder Cup.

Baviera is an even course, characterized by its wide greens and a great variety of obstacles which offer a require a wide range of strokes. It is an ideal design for all levels of handicap.

Baviera The variety of holes and the unsurpassable views both to the Mediterranean sea and the mountains will ensure you enjoy an unforgettable day of golf.

18 holes for a couple cost 88 euros but there are always deals. For more information click Baviera Golf

Anoreta golf course

Opened 15 years ago, Anoreta lead the way in new golf construction east of Malaga. For all types of player, its main attraction is its superb water obstacles.

Anoreta Golf Club-houseThe course was designed by Jose Maria Canizares, and opened in 1990. It is enjoyed by all standards of players. There are spectacular views of the sea, and the surrounding mountains make this course a delight.

This really is a golf course which suits all players, demanding from the first tee but with easy-to-play fairways, fast and rolling greens, some well protected by bunkers; water obstacles on the course.

All in all, a varied and pleasant round. It is located at, Urb del Golf, Rincon de la Victoria, Malaga Tel: 952 404 000.

AnoretaIt is just a few miles further on from Baviera.

For current information on prices of green fees, buggy and club hire or to book a tee time click on the anoreta website.

If this is still under construction (don't ask!) you can book through ringing the number I have provided. Alternatively contact one of the many golfing holiday websites

Other outdoor activities in and around Frigiliana

As soon as you have spent a few days in Frigiliana and area you will realise there are far too many activities to list here on one site. Therefore I have simply highlighted those that have been most popular with previous guests and therefore come with at least some sort of recommendation

Scuba and diving near Frigiliana

DiversBuceao Costa Nerja. Burriana beach. tele 95 252 86 10 or www.nerjadiving.com

Scuba Nerja. Burriana beach tele 95 252 7251. Or scubanerja

If you walk along the beach road at Burriana you will find the Scuba centre.

They have skilled trainers who can accommodate most needs.

There is some great diving to be enjoyed in the area.

There are dives and lessons every day unless the sea conditions are unsafe.

DiversMy own favourite spot is in La Herradura, near Joaquin's restaurant.

It's on the east side of the beach and I guess the water is between 3 and 9 metres deep.

The sea bed is rocks and sand and you will see many small fish and also Octopus.

The diving here benefits from the Atlantic Stream which brings plankton and many other life forms to this part of the Med.

The result is a varied and abundant selection of marine life. Some of which are unique to this coast.

Horse riding near Frigiliana

riding on the beach Nerja riding centre. tele Gill on: 664 552 658

We can recommend this one as one of our friends has used it on several occasions.

They give you an assessment before any riding, and design a trip accordingly.

Our friend went riding on the beach and also up the Chillar valley.

Horse and riderCortijo Hidalgo Frigiliana tele 952 521 023

This is the only place I could find advertised that is actually in Frigiliana.

I have not been there and I do not know anyone who has ridden the horses.

Perhaps you could provide me with some feedback, if you have any experience of them.

One thing to remember when in Spain is that safety is not always considered as important as in the UK.

This is not because anyone would deliberately place you in a dangerous situation - it is simply a different attitude.

Please make sure, therefore, that you have riding helemets and any other protection you require, provided.

Tennis near Frigiliana

You can book a tennis court at La Raqueta Nerja. La Raqueta Nerja has three full size Tennis courts available to hire for blocks of one hour.

TennisThere are changing rooms and shower facilities, and of course tennis racquets can be hired. Prices are very reasonable.

La Raqueta Nerja also has a snack bar and restaurant overlooking the tennis courts making it ideal for a spot of lunch after a hard game.

The last time I looked the prices were:

  • Tennis court hire per hour 8 Euros per Court

  • Tennis Racquet Hire (Including Tennis balls) 1 Euro per Racquet.

  • telephone: 0034 95 252 0948.

La Raqueta Tennis courts are located opposite Hotel Nerja Club on the main road (N340) between the Supersol supermarket and entrance to Capistrano Village.

    Gyms and fitness near Frigiliana

Frigiliana gym. There is a reasonably well equipped gym in Frigiliana. Just go out of the apartment block and turn left, walk 300 meters and you will get to the sports hall and Gym.

The daily charge is €3, however if you intend using the gym more than 4 days you will be better off buying a monthly ticket for €10 (spring 2007 prices).

The gym has a couple of bikes, one running and one step machine.

It has a wide range of fixed weight machines for both upper and lower body muscle training and development.

There is a decent variety of free weights and horizontal/incline benches.

In the Sports hall you can play or practice football, basketball, indoor rock climbing and table tennis. Downstairs there are plenty of showers and changing rooms.

    The local swimming pool

For superb swimming (apart from the apartment pool), all you need to do is go to the village swimming pool.

Just turn right after the school and before the gym (ie. go out of the apartment block, turn left and walk for 300 metres)

All this for €2 a day The pool is extremely large, and safety is assured by the constant presence of lifeguards.

It is usually open from mid June to mid September from about 13:00 to 19:00.

You can stay as long as you like for €2 per day (adult) or €1.50 per day (children).

Although the pool is an ideal size and in an idyllic location it rarely gets very busy, for example the photo above was taken in the middle of August.

By the side of the pool is a very good snack bar/restaurant called Splash.

    Aqua Velis

For the young, the brave, or the really bonkers an exciting day out can be had by visiting Aqua Velis.

It is easily reached in about 20 minutes by driving down the motorway toward Malaga and taking the Torre Del Mar exit.

Swim trunk stretching stuff! As water theme parks go this ranks up there with the very best in Spain, with chutes and slides ranging from easy to stomach clenchingly awesome

. At the very edge of reason is "Foam" and if you can get down this ride without your trunks half way up your chest you earn respect!

Once recovered, you can visit the large shopping complex opposite for some well deserved retail therapy in a wide variety of boutiques.
